Whether ending an awesome experience in the Berg or Lesotho, or embarking on an exciting journey through the Battlefields into Zululand or down the lush South Coast and laid back Wild Coast... head for the middle to Umphiti Backpackers, a central Pietermaritzburg Victorian home, with a lounge to swing a Bengal tiger in, a country kitchen fit for everyone, even the unprepared, a chill spot on the back verandah, candlelit summer evenings, winter nights around the cosy fireplace and a friendly and interesting city to explore. Sleeping for the weary traveller, solo or with friends choose from three dormitories: the lounge, the study and the udder room, large airy rooms furnished with 6 and 3 / 4 beds. For couples or those just wanting privacy, there are two double rooms, one with en-suite. Queen size beds in Double rooms! All beds are comfortable and made up with fresh clean linen. Large groups are welcome, Umphiti can accommodate up to 22 people, with all rooms set as dormitories. Also has an allocated camping ground. Communal bathrooms do not have baths, showers only. Currently there are two showers and two toilets. Construction almost complete for a new shower and toilet! Watch this space. Double room is fitted with it's own hand wash basin. The en-suite has a bath that's big enough for two!! Eating in Pietermaritzburg is the finest, from a buffet of “eat as much as you like of everything imaginable”, to pub grub and fresh phat rump steaks, to seafood and fine cuisine. Satisify your hunger …..especially here at Umphiti, with Kelvin, it's resident cook, tantalising you with his expressions of taste and colour. "It's good farmstyle food, made fresh with garden herbs." --"Try his Durban Curry! woah!!" The kitchen is designed for all guests: for pleasurable self-catering cooking, kitted with most needed utensils and knives etc., cook with gas, open fire or microwave. Don't forget to pick your in-season vegetables and fruit from Umphiti's organic garden. Relax In the garden, and splash in the pool. Have a beer, and soak up the sun. Feel the tension from your backpack fade away. Want to watch TV. and empty your mind, there's a VCR and 6 TV channels -1 dedicated to sport. Plenty of games and good company.
